The urban 'heavy' rail networks of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Wellington (NZ) are already electric.  Adelaide and Auckland are planning (or in the process of) converting to electric.

A Very Fast Train (Melbourne –Canberra – Sydney) back under discussion.
